When Lowell swept west of Niʻihau as a hurricane on the night of September 7, it left a human-impact ledger — one death on Oʻahu, about 90% of Kauaʻi customers without power, wrecked harbor piers — while today’s official storm is a weaker tropical storm far offshore (see Adv 54 card).

Call the present tense carefully. Lowell was a hurricane when it passed west of Niʻihau late on 7 September — 110 mph on the Watchers/NHC evening stamp — and Kauaʻi woke to a dark island: roughly nine in ten utility customers without power, roads closed under poles and slides, Port Allen’s piers wrecked, schools shut for days. One man died on Oʻahu when a tree crushed a tent at Sherwood Beach. That is the aftermath card. Separately, Advisory 54 — already on the board — holds today’s storm as a tropical storm near 28.1N 162.3W, about 460 miles north-northwest of Lihue, 60 mph / 985 mb, watches none, land hazards none.
