The latest geographic expansion increases the risk of cross-border transmission
Trend (WHO)
National daily new-case count remains high; transmission intensity varies sharply by province and health zone
Mortality signal (WHO)
Continuously high CFR and a high rate of deaths in communities point to delays in case detection and access to early care

Note

The World Health Organization’s September 25 Disease Outbreak News puts hard numbers back on the Bundibugyo Ebola board in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of September 23: 7,890 confirmed cases, 3,799 deaths, a crude case fatality ratio of 48.1%, and 1,966 recovered. Since the previous DON on September 11, WHO counts 1,133 more confirmed cases and 532 more confirmed deaths.

The outbreak has entered two more health zones — Bulu in Sud Ubangi, a new province for this epidemic, and Dungu in Haut-Uélé on the South Sudan border. That brings the footprint to 63 health zones across seven provinces; 48 zones in six provinces reported at least one case in the last 21 days. Ituri remains the hardest-hit province. WHO says the new geography raises cross-border transmission risk, flags the still-high rate of deaths in communities as a detection and care-access failure, and again calls this the largest Ebola disease outbreak ever recorded in the DRC regardless of virus species.

This supersedes the September 2 ~3,000-death card as the live Ebola stamp; that page and the August DON616 card stay live in the archive. Any confirmed South Sudan case and the next WHO count go to the HUD.

Why it matters

Nearly thirty-eight hundred dead on the official stamp, a new province on the zone list, and a border district facing South Sudan. WHO’s own product calls it the largest Ebola outbreak the Congo has ever recorded. Official count and geography — not a claim that the virus has already crossed.
