Tiny NEO 2026 SA8 skims ~0.99 LD on Sept 28 — flyby, not a strike

Origin Lane: neoNASA JPL CNEOS, Pasadena, California

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies close-approach table lists newly observed object 2026 SA8 at a nominal Earth-center distance of 0.002539 astronomical units on 28 September 2026 at 06:45 TDB — about 0.99 lunar distances — a close flyby of a few-meter-scale rock, not an impact for this weekend’s pass, with a second catalog object 2026 SC due ~1.70 LD on September 25.

Assumed place pin at JPL/CNEOS (Pasadena) — no Earth impact location; close approach ≠ impact.

Note

NASA’s close-approach table puts newly watched rock 2026 SA8 about 0.99 lunar distances from Earth on September 28 — a tight catalog flyby of a few-meter-scale object, not a strike. Official CAD distance is 0.002539 astronomical units at 06:45 TDB, with relative speed about 6.61 kilometers per second and absolute magnitude near 28.6. Using the desk lunar-distance constant (1 LD ≈ 0.002569555 au), that miss converts to about 0.988 LD; the min/max band stays in the same ballpark (~0.975–1.001 LD). JPL SBDB stamps it as an Apollo NEO, not a potentially hazardous asteroid, on a short two-day observation arc. Sentry lists only remote future virtual-impactor rows with strongly negative Palermo scores — not a September 28 impact.

The same CAD window also shows 2026 SC at about 1.704 LD on September 25; closer on the calendar, farther than SA8’s sub-LD skim. Live orbit updates stay on the HUD.

Why it matters

A brand-new rock threads just inside one lunar distance this weekend. Catalog says flyby. Short arc. Watch the table, not the prophecy boards.
