UNIFIL sees heavy IDF fire across Blue Line — mission clock ticking
At the UN Spokesperson’s daily press briefing on 31 August 2026, UNIFIL reported it continues to observe extensive Israel Defense Forces (IDF) activity inside Lebanon. In recent days peacekeepers recorded significant IDF artillery activity across the mission area of operations, across the Blue Line and at sea, plus troop deployments, engineering works and position maintenance. Special Coordinator ad interim for Lebanon Jean Arnault briefed the Security Council in closed consultations in New York on major security, humanitarian and economic challenges and the need for a substantial international presence in southern Lebanon after UNIFIL’s mandate ends to help avoid a security vacuum.
