WFP halves West Bank food aid — Gaza coordinator starts 3-day strip visit
At the UN Spokesperson’s daily press briefing on 1 September 2026, the office reported that Special Coordinator ad interim for the Middle East Peace Process Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov started a three-day visit to the Gaza Strip — a Gaza City International Medical Corps field hospital treating casualties from air strikes and other military attacks; a makeshift displacement site in Khan Younis at high flood risk once rains begin; and a desalination plant in Deir al Balah that could become hard to access once rains restart. Separately, WFP said funding shortfalls are forcing a cut of food assistance by half in the West Bank as food needs there have more than doubled since 2023: an estimated 900,000 people are food insecure in the West Bank, and assistance scales back from 400,000 reached to date to 200,000 starting September.
