UNAMA: 95% of war victims report psych harm — justice still out of reach

UNAMA released a new report in Kabul on 1 September 2026 titled Left behind: The rights of victims in the aftermath of decades of armed conflict in Afghanistan. The report is based on interviews with 195 victims of armed conflict and their relatives and focuses primarily on conflict from 2001 until the Taliban takeover on 15 August 2021. Almost all interviewees (95%) reported emotional or psychological harm; over half (58%) experienced physical harm. More than half (55%) had never attempted to seek justice, compensation or other redress; among those who did, 64% reported efforts were unsuccessful.
